Gaussian splatting is an innovative method of capturing a real place or object and transforming it into a fully explorable 3D scene. Instead of constructing a model out of hard surfaces and polygons, as seen in traditional 3D graphics, it represents the world through millions of tiny, soft, colored blobs — each one a “Gaussian” characterized by its own unique position, size, color, and transparency. These individual Gaussians are meticulously layered together by the millions, creating an intricate tapestry that blends effortlessly into a composition that looks startlingly real.
The magic is that it’s built entirely from ordinary photographs. Take a series of pictures of a subject from different angles, and the technique figures out where every blob should sit in space to reproduce what the camera saw. The result is a scene you can spin, zoom, and move through in real time — photography you can walk around inside.
